Yamada Sobi(1871-1916)was born as the fourth son of swordsmith family which served Lord Daishoji.
He started studying inlay and repoussage techniques under his father Sokou around 1885.
In 1890,he succeeded traditional name of the family Chozaburo and became Chozaburo the 10th because his three elder brothers passed away in their childhoods. He Also changed his name from Youtaro to Sobi.
When he was 20 years old, he invented a new technique “Tetsu-Uchidashi” which produced a three-dimensional object from a sheet of iron as hammering and with making patterns.
He was awarded several times in domestic and international competitions,and many of his works owned by the Imperial family and foreign museums.
It is not too much to say that he was one of the greatest artists in Meiji period.
When he was 44 years old,he was nominated as an imperial artist which was the most honorable artist title as the first artist who lived outside of Tokyo, however he passed away and couldn't have the title.
